conviction, sin and the Holy Spirit

This has been on my mind since talking to Gareth on the weekend (I’m basically just posting what he said), so I thought I’d share it:

John 16:8 “And when [the Holy Spirit] comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment”

John 16:13 “When the [Holy Spirit] comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.”

So if the Holy Spirit convicts us when we sin, and guides us away from sin, then why is it that so many Christians do sin, despite “knowing it’s wrong”, and just don’t seem to care?

Maybe where there’s no conviction, there’s no Holy Spirit…

Praying…

I’m not sure if I’ve already posted this or not, but even if I have it’s worth hearing again. I’m busy listening through “REMIX: Changing the Way You Pray” by Sandals Church and this piece really stood out for me (again):

If you’re not praying in your small group, it’s not a Christian small group.

If you’re not praying in your marriage, it’s not a Christian marriage.

If you’re not praying together as friends, it’s not a Christian friendship.

What defines Christianity is brother-hood - coming together, praying - which is just talking - to God, our father in heaven.

You and I, we need to pray more - and we need to do it together.

“Lifehouse - Everything” skit by The Mission

This is an amazingly powerful video that I saw recently, it’s had millions of views over the last few months that it’s been out on the net, and it’s definitely worth watching. It was performed by a group called “The Mission” at Winterfest 2006.

You can download a higher quality version of this video here, or order the DVD from Church of God International Youth & Christian Education for $15.
